Must We Support Jobs for Polluters?

After listening to debate on EPA nominee (now confirmed) Scott Pruitt yesterday, I realize how vexed I am by one of the key Republican talking points for gutting EPA standards — that “draconian” environmental laws kill American jobs.

I’m all for saving jobs, but here’s the part I don’t understand: If you make your living in a way detrimental to our land, air or water, shouldn’t the common good outweigh our concern for your job? If your livelihood entails raping the land or polluting the environment, shouldn’t we care more about the world we’re leaving our children, than people who contributed to that damage getting paid for it?

Sorry, folks, but if I made my living stomping on baby ducks, I would expect that someone would stop me — even if it meant I didn’t get a paycheck that week.
