Just when I thought being a Senate-watcher was about to enter another coma-inducing day of long speeches and C-SPAN excitement, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) late last week shook things up by doing some impromptu stand-up comedy on the Senate floor. Hatch, who is now the longest-serving Republican in U.S. Senate history, started by lauding Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
“The majority leader, Senator McConnell, in my opinion, is the best majority leader we have had here in a long, long time,” said Hatch, stifling a giggle and almost breaking character. “He is smart. He understands the system. He loves the Senate. He is a very honest and good man.”
As bad comedian Kenny Bania from Seinfeld sometimes said “That’s gold, Jerry. Gold!” I have to admit when Hatch delivered that “honest and good man” punch line, a little bit of coffee came out of my nose.
He then turned his attention to Trump and what a great president he could be if we all just support him and, get this, show him some respect.
“I actually believe the President will grow into becoming a great President, too, if we will help him a little bit rather than just fight everything he does or everything he says or try to criticize him every time he opens his mouth. I would like to see us show some respect for the President too.”
See, it’s funny because of how little respect and cooperation they ever gave President Obama — get it?
And he ended with the show stopper that had the Senate gallery of four people on their feet applauding.
“I believe President Trump is the person who is right for this time. I believe he will do a terrific job if we will help him.”
That’s all for Senator Hatch for tonight, folks. Be sure to tip your waiter or waitress.
