Senate Floor Debate on Tillerson Nomination Begins Monday

Trump’s Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson will be the subject of Senate floor debate tomorrow, before a procedural vote that may pave the way for a full confirmation vote on Wednesday. This is terrible timing for Tillerson given Trump’s decision to embarrass us on the world stage with his un-American action banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

It should be an interesting week but, no matter what Tillerson says about Trump’s executive order, I agree completely with people who say Tillerson should not get a single Democratic vote to run the State Department. If the Senate Democratic caucus provides 48 ‘nay’ votes, it will take only three Republican Senators with a conscience — yes, I understand the improbability of that — to kill his nomination and send a strong message to Trump.

Trump Invokes “Founding Principles” in Banning Muslims

If you haven’t seen the text of Trump’s un-American executive order banning Muslims from certain countries from entering the United States, have a look at this excerpt:

“In order to protect Americans, the United States must ensure that those admitted to this country do not bear hostile attitudes toward it and its founding principles.”

It’s incredibly sick and ignorant to invoke our county’s “founding principles” in the course of doing something that so completely debases those values.

Trump’s Executive Order Makes This Vet Regret Serving

If someone had told me 40+ years ago, when I was just a young guy from a lower-middle class family trying to earn the G.I. Bill, that I would be serving a nation that would one day ban 132 million people from entering our country based almost exclusively on their religion, I would have found another way to achieve my education.

(And, yes, that smiling young fella is indeed me.)

As an American and as a Veteran, I am profoundly ashamed of my country right now.

All the Best Diplomats Threaten People

Yeah, this is how you exercise diplomacy, influence people and get them on your side.

“For those that don’t have our back, we’re taking names,” said Haley. “We will make points to respond to that accordingly.”

Just like her boss, Haley mistakes being obnoxious with being strong.
